OK, so lets start from the basics. 

What is a MANTRA ?

Any phrase or combination of words which aligns our consciousness on its repetition is simply a mantra. Mantra repetition technique is also termed as MINDFUL MEDITATION which is an ancient practice used by Sages and spiritual followers to realize their inner self and experience higher levels consciousness.

Now the question arises, why and how these mantras work?  

How?

Lets first understand this process with a phrase. 'I am getting better day by day' -  if anyone repeats this phrase daily repeatedly for several days, he/she will certainly observe many subtle changes in their behavior leading towards the manifestation of this phrase. This practice will direct and affirm your mind that you are getting better, and automatically your attention will shift on more positive
and progressive aspects of your personality rather than your shortcomings and limits. The moment your focus goes on brighter points, the more confidence you will generate and hence there will be an overall positive shift on your wellness, approach towards life and mindset. Corollary, this positive avalanche will have its impact on your overall health, mind and body.

So in a nutshell, we can understand mantras in the form of different practices we adopt in our daily lives consciously and sub-consciously, which alter our behavior and the way we think. For example, if you say I HATE THIS! daily for any specific thing, naturally you will develop a sort of discomfort or repulsion for that thing without even realizing it. This process actually works on a very famous principle known as LAW OF ATTRACTION, which says you simply attract what you always feel, think and say. The more negative you feel/think/say the more troubles you will attract, and vice-versa.    

WHY?

If you notice closely, the entire game here is nothing but the MIND. The kind of command or exposure we provide it, the similar impact gets induced in our behavior and approach. 

That's why this ancient technique is also termed as MINDFUL MEDITATION. We can understand mindful meditation as a process which call you to put all your attention on a single point so intensely that it vanishes all the thoughts from your mind, and you are only left with the vibrations of the MANTRA which you are repeating. In-fact this process is not just limited to mantras or chants, anything which compels you to withdraw your attention from all other thoughts, and collectively putting this undivided attention on a single point is mindful meditation. For example, if you are listening your favorite music with all your attention, congratulations you are subconsciously on mindful meditation. Again not just music, I repeat again, any process which puts all your divided attention on a single point or activity simply becomes MINDFUL MEDITATION; for ex. running, swimming, dancing, singing and the list is countless. 

THE SCIENCE BEHIND ~M-A-N-T-R-A-S~

When we talk about MANTRAS, this science of repetition becomes even more POWERFUL. As, we all know that SANSKRIT is the only language which is completely based on SOUND. For ex. if we look at English language, the sound of SUN and SON are same but meaning is different. There are many such examples which reflect this mismatch between sound and meaning, but in case of SANSKRIT, there is no scope of such glitches as the language derives its foundation from sound.

Now, if we further dichotomize the aspect of sound, its nothing but a FORM, or we can say a form is nothing but sound. For ex. just look around we all have different forms around us in the form of human beings and other species. Our body is nothing but a kind of form, vibrating at a particular frequency. Similarly, a mantra is a combination of select frequencies in the form of words, which when gets repeated in our mind generates a kind of form/vibration which directly impacts our mind, body and soul. The more we repeat a specific mantra, the more our consciousness gets aligned to its frequency resulting in better equilibrium between mind, body and soul.

Hence MINDFUL MEDITATION with a specific mantra holds tremendous healing power, which is realized by the practitioner over time after consistent practice. The main problem comes in the way is distraction of mind again and again while practicing. This happens because our minds are already jammed and choked with so many thoughts that new information or practice finds no land to get seeded. Hence, once the practitioner crosses this hurdle and achieves the sitting of at-least 30 minutes at a time, we can certainly expect miracles to happen with time.
